Are you and your family ready if there is an emergency?  Emergency situations strike without notice and preparing for some situations ahead of time can be an important first step in keeping your family and community safe.  When families are prepared, we can help friends and neighbors in need and recover faster from emergencies and disasters.  Brown County is participating in a year-long campaign called “Do 1 Thing”.  Each month consists of a different topic to help you become more prepared.  The topic for November is:  Emergency Supplies.

Below is a list of things that you can do to achieve your goal this month. Choose at least one, and complete it.

* Gather your emergency supplies in an accessible place.

* Create an emergency supply kit for your pet, your car, and your workplace or school.

* Stash some cash in case ATMs and credit card machines are not usable in a disaster.

Any emergency is easier to handle when you have prepared ahead of time. Put together an emergency kit with important items to keep at home, and a go bag with items you will need to take with you if you evacuate. Think about what you and your family would need in a disaster. You can make kits for your home, car or workplace. Emergencies can happen anywhere.

When severe weather is predicted, make sure your car has a full tank of gas. You don’t want to wait in line for gas if you are told to evacuate. Some storms may also knock out electricity, causing gas stations to close
